YAKIMA - The Pomeroy Pirates have dominated the 1B state Volleyball tournament, earning two second-place finishes (2016, 2015), one third-place finish (2013) and one state title (2014) in the last six years.
The Pirates are entering the tournament with a 20-6 regular season record. Deana Caruso led the team in kills, Sydney Smith led the way in assists and Carmen Gingerich was named the dig leader for a team returning all seven of its starters from last year's runner-up squad.
"Everyone is returning, I only lost one that graduated last year, all these kids started a year ago." Pirates coach Jim Greene said.
Pomeroy has been a consistent staple at State. In fact, the last time the Pirates missed the postseason was six years ago, in 2012. Since then Greene has built a successful program,
"I think there (are) four factors to building a successful program, a community that wants it, an administration that will support it, kids that want to play at a high level and a coach that will be able to force kids to their utmost limit and we have all of that in Pomeroy," Greene said.
The Colton Wildcats have also earned a trip to the Washington Class 1B state tournament after posting up a 15-3 regular season record. They were led by Jordyn Moehrle, who leads the Wildcats in kills as well as digs. Abby Kelly leads the team in assists.
For Colton this is its first time reaching the postseason since 2012 and according to head coach Kelli Dahmen, it's all about her girls being multi-sport athletes,
"We have a strong group of juniors and freshman, none of which were on the state team, but have all had association with basketball State and they know what it takes to make it and they've been driven since day one, ever since my juniors were freshman." Dahmen said.
Dahmen has a lot of confidence in her young group of girls heading into State and said if the Wildcats want to go the distance, they have to do their job,
"Were going to have to stay focused in the game and focus on what our jobs, are we talk about it everyday in practice." Dahmen said.
The 1B State volleyball tournament will take place at the Yakima Sun Dome on Nov. 9-10.
