Boise State men, women end same decades-long drought with ‘unselfishness’

For decades, the Boise State men’s and women’s basketball programs shared an identical drought in one statistical category.

But in a matter of just one week this season, those droughts came to an end.

One Bronco has a pretty good hunch why.

“I think it’s just that Bronco basketball stands for unselfishness,” senior forward Chris Sengfelder said. “We move the ball. We pass it to the open guy. We pass up the good shot for the great shot.”

After coming close to a triple-double in the women’s opener Nov. 10 against Northwest Christian, junior guard Marta Hermida totaled 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 94-50 victory over Corban on Nov. 26.

It was just the second triple-double in Boise State women’s basketball history and the first in 37 years. Karla Meier is the only other Bronco to record a triple-double, getting 14 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals against Montana on Feb. 9, 1980.

Not to be outdone, the men’s team followed exactly a week later with a triple-double of its own when senior Chandler Hutchison had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 77-54 victory over Portland on Dec. 3.

It was the first triple-double in Boise State history, the fifth in the history of the Mountain West Conference and the sixth this season in all of Division I.

Both Hermida and Hutchison deflected credit for their performances.

“It’s good to have guys who can shoot the ball,” Hutchison said. “(The triple-double) doesn’t happen without that.”

Said Hermida, who is from Madrid, Spain: “It’s crazy because when I did it, it was a big deal for everyone. I didn’t know it was going to be that much. I just tried to do my best.”

Presnell took over at Boise State in 2005, and men’s coach Leon Rice is in his eighth season. It’s not unusual for the two to bounce ideas off each other, and both said the triple-double run is just a product of the winning culture at Boise State.

“We do actually share a lot of things. I always lean on Gordy on things that they do. Gordy’s a really good coach,” Rice said. “I always try to peek in on things he’s doing, and we sit in his office and X-and-O and talk about both our teams a lot.

“I’ve been fortunate these eight years, Gordy’s been here the whole time, so we do. We have a special relationship, and I feel really fortunate to have a guy like Gordy who I can bounce things off of.”
