Cougars split on day one of Parma tournament

At Parma, the South Fremont High School boys basketball team began the Parma Holiday Tournament with a 55-39 win over Victory Charter on Wednesday.

The Cougars turned a 22-22 halftime quagmire into a 35-32 lead after three quarters before outscoring the Vipers 20-7 in the fourth quarter. South Fremont coach Ryon Pope said the Cougars outrebounded the Vipers 40-27.

“I thought our guys persevered,” Pope said. “We pushed the tempo in the fourth quarter and got a lead.”

Kyler Yancey had 16 points while Reece Yancey and Tagg Bair added 10 each for South Fremont (3-5), which plays at 6:30 p.m. tonight against Wednesday’s Parma-Ontario winner.

VALLIVUE 54, SOUTH FREMONT 47: At Parma, Vallivue edged South Fremont in the first round of the Parma Holiday Tournament.

Vallivue led 24-23 at halftime and South Fremont led 40-39 after three before Vallivue capitalized on South Fremont turnovers in the fourth quarter.

“They got easy layups and took control from there,” South Fremont coach Ryan Erikson said.

Paizlee Hobbs had 13 points while Olivia LeCheminant had a game-high 24 points for the Cougars (6-6), who play Ontario (Ore.) at 11 a.m. today.
