Room 4428 at Women’s and Children’s Hospital was filled with joy Monday morning as Alexis Duty, 20, and Andrew Campbell, 20, celebrated the birth of a baby boy.

Luca Jordan Campbell is the couple’s first child and Columbia’s first baby of 2018. He was delivered at 2:46 a.m. He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces, and measured 20.5 inches.

“Everything is perfect,” Duty said.

Duty said she and Campbell weren’t expecting Luca to be born in the new year after being induced on New Year’s Eve, but the delivery took longer than expected.

“We went into 2017 together,” Duty said, “so I thought that it’d be cool to go into 2018 as a family.”

Luca’s name was inspired by Campbell’s Sicilian heritage and his own middle name, Jordan.

The couple met in 2016 while Duty was working at a Dairy Queen in Chillicothe. Campbell’s aunt was Duty’s boss at the store, and they met when he stopped to drop something off one day.

They connected on social media, and his persistence paid off.

“He just kept trying to get hold of me on social media,” Duty said.

Although they are not married, Campbell said eventually they will be.

“One day at a time,” he said.

Duty is majoring in early childhood education at North Central Missouri College in Trenton and wants to open her own day care center.

The couple moved in October to Mexico, Missouri, where Campbell works at JDi Concrete.

The family received a gift from the hospital, a red Radio Flyer wagon filled with diapers, formula bottles, onesies, baby toiletries and 2018 glasses.

They are hoping to be discharged on Wednesday.
