Woman claims she fired in self-defense
SANDPOINT -- The shooting death of a Clark Fork man on Tuesday night appears to be a case of self-defense, Bonner County Sheriff's officials said on Wednesday.
The identity of the shooting victim and the woman who pulled the trigger were not released on Wednesday.
"She's claiming she was physically attacked and had to defend herself," Sheriff's Det. John Valdez said, declining to elaborate.
The shooting north of Clark Fork remains under investigation and an autopsy of the 42-year-old victim was planned for Wednesday.
Background checks on both individuals were also under way Wednesday.
Criminal charges have not been filed and it was not immediately clear if any are forthcoming.
It is legal in Idaho to kill somebody in order to protect yourself from harm.
The handgun killing happened at about 9:10 p.m. in the 200 block of East Mountain View Drive. Valdez said the 34-year-old woman was an acquaintance and former co-worker of the man.
"She was giving him a ride home, ostensibly because he had a broken down vehicle," said Valdez.
The man died of a single gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency medical technicians responded to the scene and a landing zone for a Northwest MedStar air ambulance was established at the Clark Fork Junior/Senior High School, but Valdez said the man died.
