SANDPOINT -- The final round of herbicide treatments utilizing Renovate is planned for Wednesday, according to Bonner County officials and the contractor hired to douse the Eurasian milfoil infestations in Lake Pend Oreille.

Four areas between East Hope and Clark Fork are targeted for treatment, although county commissioners and the Bonner County Aquatic Invasive Species Task Force are slated to discuss this round of treatments on Tuesday.

The four areas consist of a 21-acre colony on the east side of Sheepherder Point, a 3 1/2-acre infestation off Denton Point, an 8-acre infestation at the mouth of Denton Slough, and an isolated 7-acre clot near the mouth of the Clark Fork Delta.

Renovate contains the active ingredient triclopyr, which has a five-day water use restriction in treatment areas. Signs will be posted to notify people of the treatments. The signs will be taken down when the restrictions are lifted.

Bonner County Public Works Director Leslie Marshall expects the county commission and the task force to endorse the treatment locations. However, Tom McNabb and an expert from the University of Idaho plan to take a closer look at the infestation in the delta later this week.

"It's got a lot of fragmentations breaking off for some reason in there and they're actually going to go out this Friday to look at the fragments and find out why they're breaking off," she said.

Task Force Chairman Phil Hough could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon and a phone message left at his home was not returned.

A third an final round of herbicide treatments using Sonar, which has no use restrictions, is scheduled for the week of August 20 in the Pend Oreille River.

"Then that's it. We're done," Marshall said.

• More information about the treatment program can be found on the Internet (www.pendoreillemilfoil.com) or by calling Clean Lakes' spokeswoman Vicky Carding at (208) 946-8832. Clean Lakes information at the corner of First and Pine is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

When Is Lake Water Safe? wrote on Aug 4, 2007 8:26 AM:

" So, when can we swim in the lake and drink the water? Maybe September, right after they drop the water!!! Another "lakeless" summer for Pointheads. The weeds keep coming back so lets try something else. We want to swim in our lake and drink the water and eat the fish again. Please. "
