Bra removal request catches couple off-guard Posted: Thursday, Oct 04, 2007 - 09:19:23 am PDT By MARC STEWART Hagadone News Network
COEUR d'ALENE -- Victoria has no secrets at the federal courthouse.
A Bonners Ferry woman said she was forced to remove her bra by court security -- in full view of everyone -- before she was allowed to go inside.
"I was embarrassed and humiliated," Lori Plato said Wednesday. "I am a modest person and I know that I am not the first woman this has happened to."
Plato said on Sept. 20, she and her husband, Owen, went to federal court in Coeur d'Alene on a civil matter and were stunned when security requested that she remove her underwire-style bra after the metal supports set off the detector.
"I asked if I could go into the bathroom because they didn't have a privacy screen and no women security officers were available," Plato said. "They said, 'No.' I wasn't carrying a shank in my bra. If it's so dangerous, why did they give it back and let me put it on?"
Patrick McDonald, a U.S. Marshal in Boise, released a statement about the bra flap.
"The Marshals Service is aware of an event involving a person who was initially denied entry into the courthouse on Sept. 20 due to security concerns raised when she attempted to walk through the metal detectors. We have been in contact with the individual and have discussed what occurred with her. Appropriate security protocols were followed during the incident, and the individual was given a number of options by the court security officers that would have insured her privacy and enabled her entry into the courthouse. The individual, however, chose not to follow any of the options."
Plato said those options included going to her car to change or finding a restaurant bathroom.
"I am not familiar with downtown Coeur d'Alene, so I didn't know where I could go, and we were parked on a busy street," she said. "I couldn't leave because I had to be in court."
So, Plato's husband shielded his wife with his coat, and she removed her bra under her shirt.
"The security didn't bat an eye," she said. "I put it on the security conveyor belt. One of the officers said, 'It's a girl.' It was mortifying."
The bra incident bothered her so much that she complained to a court security supervisor in Boise who promised her that he would review Coeur d'Alene's procedures.
Men entering the federal courthouse are required to remove their belts.
Plato said all she wants is an apology and for a change in the security measures.
"I don't want this to ever happen again," she said. "I know they screwed up."

" The person who posted the comment that Ms. Plato could have worn a bra without an underwire has NO CLUE what it is like to be a large woman. You don't have a choice unless you want to sag down to your knees or get surgery to reduce your breasts. Bras without underwire simply do NOT provide support, and now large breasted women are made to feel like criminals in airports, courthouses and anyplace else with metal detectors. "

" What is wrong with this. After all, the US in now a police state, run by a religious fascist torturer war criminal. Typical is a land lost of its freedom! "

" I would like to know why an Idaho courthouse feels it must deal with underwire bras in a way more drastic than an airport screening system, including those in Washington DC. If an underwire bra triggers a metal detector, then a woman is wanded and perhaps given pat down search. She is NOT required to remove her underwear to enter!
What's in the water in Coeur d'Alene? "

" she was not asked to take off her bra...maybe with some follow up reporting we will get the real story, ah hummm, listening? "

" WHY did she go to court wearing a metal underwire bra?
Why was she surprised that the metal detector identified the metal?
This seems to me to be a foolish incident that she is milking for publicity. "

" If the security people make exceptions for bras with metal in them, that would allow people to hide knives, etc., near their chests. Simple solution is to wear a bra w/o metal inserts.
The safeguards are there to protect all of us. "

" A smaller cup size would have likely not resulted in this incident. Ms. Plato, who is obviously not so embarrased that she consented to an interview, should be thankful for her alarming endowment. "

" I am not surprised this happened. Coeur d'Alene has it's share of crazies, even in the court system. If people only knew how corrupt it really was. Most would not believe it unless something happened to them. "
