Weight limits in force on highways Posted: Sunday, Feb 24, 2008 - 10:23:08 am PST By KEITH KINNAIRD News editor
SANDPOINT -- Weight limits are already in effect on Highway 200 and will be put in place on Highway 57 starting Monday, the Idaho Transportation Department said.
Restrictions on both highways will be for weight and speed. Vehicles will be limited to 14,000 pounds per axle with their speed limit set at 30 miles per hour. School buses and emergency vehicles are exempt from the restrictions.
The restrictions are meant to protect roadways, which become susceptible to break-up during the freeze/thaw cycle.
Idaho State Police will be enforcing speed restrictions on trucks and a mobile port-of-entry detail will be checking truck weights with a set of portable scales.
"The roving inspectors have been out," said Barbara Babic, ITD's District 1 spokeswoman.
Ponderay officials announced on Friday that restrictions are in place on all but five city streets. The restrictions are not in place on Kootenai Cutoff Road, Tibbets Lane (from U.S. 95 to Fontaine Drive), Elm Street, Starr Lane (from Kootenai Cutoff to the pavement's end) and Emerald Industrial Park Road.
Weight restrictions on roads maintained by Bonner County were pending as of Friday.
Road & Bridge officials are recommending haulers make preparations before they go into place.
Real-time state highway conditions are available on the Web (www.511.idaho.gov) or by phone by dialing 511. Bonner County's road restrictions are posted on the Web (www.co.bonner.id.us) and available after hours by phone by calling 255-5681 (option 7).

" Have you taken a drive up Highway 57 to Beautiful Priest Lake? This Highway is not the only one in Northern Idaho needing attention either...Have you drove the highways in Southern Idaho?
I'm wondering if I'm the only one wanting to know when are our tax dollars will be spent on Northern Idaho Highways?? How much worse do our highways have to get before the state will allow them to be resurfaced? Sorry I'm full of questions BUT.... Where can the public go to get any headway on bringing attention to get our state highways fixed in Northern Idaho? "
