Area gets $650K in milfoil grants

SANDPOINT — Bonner County is receiving $652,000 from the state of Idaho to tangle with Eurasian milfoil this summer.

The county initially sought more than $800,000, but was forced to pare down the request because of $2 million cut in the state’s milfoil control budget. The state’s entire budget for fighting the aquatic noxious weed was slashed to about $1 million, county officials said.

Commissioners accepted the grant funding on Tuesday.

“I don’t think we can miss the opportunity,” Commissioner Lewis Rich said.

County officials fear this will be the last year the money will be available.

The funding will be spent almost entirely on herbicides, although Bonner County Noxious Weed Supervisor Leslie Marshall said some of the money will be used to install bottom barriers, which deprive the plants of sunlight they need to survive.

The casualty in this year’s battle with the weed is anticipated to be deep-water milfoil infestations in Lake Pend Oreille and the Pend Oreille River. Marshall said those areas were sacrificed this year because they’re costly and difficult to treat.

“We do have some patches that are way over 20 feet deep,” Marshall said.

The Bonner Soil & Water Conservation District has been awarded its own state grant funding to mobilize a portable hot-water boat washing station, said Jamie Davis, a water quality resource conservationist with Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts.

The state is also providing funding for station signage and money to staff the facility this summer.

“During this season, we will also work to develop a partnership of local entities to help in staffing the station into the future,” Davis said.

The Cocolalla Lake Association has also obtained grant funding for its own wash station.

Meantime, Partners for Eurasian Milfoil Control is seeking donations from the community to raise the $25,000 it needs to establish a pilot program to determine the effectiveness of using weevils to beat back the weeds.

The partnership has already raised some $90,000 for the project and another $61,000 in grant funding is being sought.

The Tri-State Water Quality Council is administering the weevil fundraising effort. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.tristatecouncil.org or call 295-9092.

" Dumping chemicals into the lake is not a good idea if there are better alternatives. In response to citizens challenge to "look it up", here is some info for all.

There are many sites documenting SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ( I know a lot of people around here have trouble with that concept)of the weevil. Read them, you will find that the weevil may be a promising alternative. Can you honestly trust the "research" of a company that manufactures these chemicals?? "

" The herbicide treatments are working. Instead of simply throwing up all the garbage you are reading online or from some of the wackos here... find out for yourself. There are PUBLIC meetings. go to them, find out for yourself where your (all of ours really) money is going. You will learn about a group working very hard to bring the lake and river closer to where it should be. Weevils have very very rarely been effective. Look that up! Talk about throwing money away! "

" We are so worried about the pollution that the Rock Cr. Mine would dump in to our beautiful lake. Isn't anyone concerned about the effects of all these chemicals we are dumping on the Milfoil? I think its a waste of money, why not just give it to someone who really needs it. You are throwing it away anyway!!! I know several families that are in dire need of help because of this economy. $650 K would go a long way to help out.

I think the weevils are the thing to look in to to battle this problem. "

" Herbicides work, nothing else does. there is not one lake anywhere in the world where the weevil keeps Milfoil under control. Frye creek treatments are successful, Jon! The weeds you still see are curly leaf pond weed, and not Milfoil. curly leaf is not being treated. "

" The public is invited to a Spring bash and Weevil Release Party on April 11 to help launch a new tool for attacking milfoil infestations in Lake Pend Oreille. Partners for Milfoil Control is raising funds for a native milfoil weevil demonstration project that offers a potentially sustainable approach to dealing with the Eurasian watermilfoil problem. This fundraising event is near the deadline when all money needs to be raised in order to implement the project this summer.
The Weevil Release Party includes a showing of the film “FLOW”, four live musical acts and an Auction for Action. Admission is $12 for all three venues including the film at the Panida Theater, the Auction at Stage Right Cellars, and music at the Little Theater.
FLOW won “best documentary” awards at the Vail and United Nations Association film festivals. In addition to identifying problems, FLOW offers an inspiring portrayal of the people and institutions providing practical solutions to global water issues.
The Auction for Action features great items to bid on including a flight over Lake Pend Oreille and specialty lake cruises on the Shawnodese with Lake Pend Oreille Cruises. A wide selection of local arts, crafts and services will also be on the bidding tables.
Weevil Rock You, the musical portion of the program, is scheduled in the Little Theater (accessed via Stage Right Cellars). Holly McGary, Beth Pederson, Rex James Trio, and Bluegrass Scramble are featured.
Schedule:
6pm - Doors to the Panida open; arrive early and enjoy Eichardt’s lobby service featuring beer and wine.

7pm – The film FLOW, with an opening performance by Cynthia’s Preschool & Kindergarten.

9pm - Music and Auction at Stage Right Cellars and the Little Theater. The auction will be open for bidding at Stage Right Cellars during the days prior to event, beginning on Thursday, April 9th.

Tickets will be sold at Common Knowledge, Eichardt’s, Stage Right Cellars, and the Panida Theater box office. Individuals may contribute tax-deductible cash gifts securely on-line at www.tristatecouncil.org.
Partners for Milfoil Control includes Tri-State Water Quality Council (fiscal sponsor), Idaho Conservation League, Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper, Panhandle Environmental League, Selkirk Conservation Alliance and Sandpoint Mothers for Safe Water. "

Is the state insane wrote on Mar 21, 2009 2:08 PM:

" The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Seems like three plus years makes a point about our state. Either somenone is getting handouts from the chemical companies or they are insane. "

" Please follow this think to important information regarding a proposal to establish a boat sticker fee to help pay for aquatic invasive prevention efforts. This is an important bill and it’s up for a vote on Monday in the state Legislature. The link below has information about the bill and an easy way to send your comments to members of the committee who will be voting on this bill. Please take a moment and help us keep quagga and zebra mussels out of Idaho’s waterways!

" This is so stupid. We have been attempting the same treatment for years now with no results. Why don't we ask someone who knows what their doing. Like a biologist, or seek help from a university conducting research. In a time when our economy is in a low slup. Why would we keep sepending huge amounts of money on treatments that don't work?

But then I remember that the messiah, the anointed one, Mr. Obama is here to save us! Thank god. "
