LPOSD kindergarten registration dates set

Print Article

Itís hard to believe that registration for kindergarten and new or transferring first- through sixth-grade students for the upcoming school year should be in our thoughts already, but the Lake Pend Oreille School District will begin registering students the first week of May.

Hope, Northside, Kootenai, Farmin-Stidwell, Washington, Sagle, and Southside elementary schools will hold new student registration from Monday, May 7, through Friday, May 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If parents cannot register their new/transferring student during those times, they should contact the new school for additional registration times at that school. Parents of all new students enrolling at or transferring to any elementary school should plan to register their children at the elementary school in the zone in which they reside.

Documents needed at the time of registration:

• Certified copy of the childís birth certificate from the state in which they were born. Please be aware that a hospital birth certificate is not a certified copy.

• Complete immunization records showing five DPT, four polio, two MMR, three hepatitis B, two hepatitis A, and two varicella (chicken pox) for children born after Sept. 1, 2005.

• Proof of residency (such as a utility bill that shows a physical address).

Now is the time to send for a copy of the certified birth certificate, if you donít already have one. The address for Idaho is: Vital Statistics, P.O. Box 83720, Boise, Idaho 83720-0036. For other states, contact the state capital, your school office, or the Lake Pend Oreille School District Office for addresses. Except in rare situations (California requests), certified birth certificates should generally be received within two weeks of mailing your request and fees.

Idaho law requires that students provide complete immunization documentation in order to attend a public school in the state of Idaho. Until all required documents are provided and paperwork is complete we will not be able to place students on a class list for the next school year.

Panhandle Health District conducts immunization clinics once a week for children who have not completed their immunizations. Please call them at 208-263-5159 for an appointment prior to kindergarten registration. Checking your childís records beforehand or a phone call to the childís physician or Panhandle Health may answer questions and ease the registration process.

Children entering kindergarten must be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2018. For enrollment into first-grade, a child must be 6 years of age on or before the first day of September. There are no exceptions under Idaho law for exceptionally mature students to enter school early.

If you are unsure of your childís school attendance zone, please contact the School District Transportation Office (208-263-3522). For registration questions, contact the school or the Lake Pend Oreille School District Office (208-263-2184). For questions regarding immunizations call Panhandle Health District (208-263-5159) or the LPO School District nurses (208-263-9525, ext.1209).
