SANDPOINT — An Oldtown man was arrested Thursday on charges that he threatened a 4-year-old girl with a knife and injuring a 2-year-old boy.

David Fernandez Jr. is charged with aggravated assault and two counts of misdemeanor injury to a child.

Fernandez, 23, made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Friday. Judge Lori Meulenberg set Fernandez’s bail at $35,000 and appointed a public defender to represent him, court records show.

Fernandez is accused of threatening the girl with a knife and injuring the toddler last month. He allegedly elbowed the boy in the gut, hit him in the face and caused his lip to bleed in one incident and roughly threw him onto a couch in another incident. The boy’s head struck a wooden divider on the couch, causing a head injury, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Fernandez denied threatening the girl and said it was done in jest, the affidavit said. He also denied striking the toddler, explaining that it was good-natured roughhousing, according to the affidavit.

A preliminary hearing on the felony assault charge is set for Dec. 13.
