Post Falls man arrested after standoff

POST FALLS — Police on Monday arrested a Post Falls man whose dog they shot Sunday night after the man allegedly sicced the animal on officers.

Randy Ness, 56, is charged with aggravated assault, a felony. He is also charged with misuse of 911 and two counts of resisting and obstructing, all felonies. The arrests were made after Ness barricaded himself in his home.

Ness reportedly called 911 around 9:15 p.m. Sunday and said he “wanted officers to take him away.”

When Post Falls police responded to Ness' home for a welfare check, the man allegedly flipped them off through a window, then let what police describe as a “large mix breed” dog out through the front door and ordered the dog to attack.

Police said the dog moved to attack an officer, who shot the animal.

The dog was “immediately incapacitated” by the gunshot, Post Falls police said in a news release.

Ness reportedly refused to come to the door again. Police eventually left the scene and obtained a warrant for Ness’ arrest.

When police returned around 2:20 p.m. Monday and attempted to serve the warrants, Ness allegedly barricaded himself inside his home.

The Post Falls Special Response Team responded to the scene.

Police said they deployed tear gas and “distraction devices” inside the home after Ness refused to come out.

Ness reportedly surrendered around 3:30 p.m.
