SANDPOINT — Former state Sen. Joyce Broadsword claimed a narrow victory over incumbent District 1 Bonner County Commissioner Cornel Rasor while Cary Kelly defeated incumbent District 3 Commissioner Lewie Rich.

The final precinct — Washington — was tallied at 1:58 a.m.

When the dust settled, Broadsword emerged with 2,857 to Rasor's 2,744 in a contest that had gone back and forth all night.

Kelly edged Rich 2,379 to 2,020. Sage Dixon, a third GOP candidate in the GOP District 3 race, tallied 938 votes. The District 3 race is expected to be decided in the primary because there are no other candidates running.

Broadsword will compete with Steve Johnson, an independent, in the Nov. 6 general election.

Incumbent Republican Sheriff Daryl Wheeler went ahead early and cruised to victory over Ponderay Police officer Tim Fry. Wheeler finished with 3,934 votes to Fry’s 1,427 votes. White supremacist Shaun Winkler, also in the hunt for the GOP nomination for sheriff, had 182 votes.

The winner of the sheriff’s race will go up against former Deputy Rocky Jordan, a Constitution Party candidate.

Bonner County Prosecutor Louis Marshall, who is uncontested in the GOP primary, had 4,126 votes. Marshall faces independents Tevis Hull and Michael Waldrup in the general election.

Congradulations to Mr Kelly and Joyce Broadsword! And to Bonner County residents for showing we are indeed a people of wanting and acting on Moral ground to bring fourth new commissioners with a proven record of respect ! Hard work, to do what is best for our County, we spoke, we voted, we will be engaged, we will give them a chance to correct the disfunction of those whom got lost in their Egos.

StptMom, I am sorry you have to tolerate the vulgar, hate filled comment from Scott S. You deserve better for having there courage to comment on our election process. While I believe in "agreeing to disagree." I always feel it should be done with mutual respect.

Ski2work .. YES, thanks for turning this to the POSITIVE with the encouraged feeling Cary + Joyce will take good care of our collective needs. I'm sorry I got agitated with the negative posts [cool]

I just figured replacing two commissioners would be cheaper than paying for a moderator and a (part-time) $35k/yr paralegal for the next two years. [wink]

Scott S .. shame'on you! Just goes to show what kind of vindictive people were backing Cornel + Rich. Nope, don't fell screwed at all .. actually very pleased that level-headed thinking prevailed. Don't you worry .. no one is taking your property or guns away. You're entitled to shut yourself up on your land + clean your barrel all you want. We really don't care .. as long as you keep your business out of our business [wink]

"Neither of these men were representing normal, environmentally conscientious citizens concerned for our community as a whole. Soooo stinkin' tired of their individual all'bout ME mentality coupled with an extreme right agenda. Good job voting citizens!! "

Maybe Mr. Nielsen will get the message we are tired of the bickering that went on in the commissioners office and start acting like a gentlemen instead of a bully that he is. People are watching and they want cooperation not personal agendas. It would really not be too hard to get rid of him.

We will see if he starts working better with the women of Bonner County politics.

Who said a person has to live in Sandpoint to be a Bonner county commissioner? Joyce has lived in Sagle for many, many years, which last time I heard was part of Bonner County. Even Cornell lives down south of town. And as for where Joyce has been lately, she has been very busy representing district 2 in the state legislature in Boise since about 2005, where she is widely known for being smart, hard working, fair and a voice of reason and common sense. Bonner County is extremely lucky to have her, and I hope she prevails in the general election.

@AngryNIdaho - post of 1:50 p.m. Where is Joyce going to take your property to, how is she going to get it there and how much does she charge per mile to transport said property??? Inquiring minds want to know!!

What a great day for normal people. We've got both ends of the extreme all upset. Way to go VOTERS!!

I'm wondering if Wynhausen will live long enough to see another Democrat elected in Bonner County??

@cclark - post of 12:32 p.m. - I had no problems with the job that Cornel did for the people. I didn't agree with everything he did but how many politicians keep all the people happy all the time?? When you use the phrase "THAT WORKED FOR THE PEOPLE," what people are you talking about?? How do you know what all the people consider good?? If he worked for you, good, but that does not mean all the people were impressed?? Bonner county is very diverse today, and becoming more moderate every year. The extremes need to get used to that.

Difficult knowing the community voted for J.B. when she has had little to do with Sandpoint…Tells me the political machine still works in Sandpoint regardless of your voting record…SHAME ON YOU VOTERS WHO THREW OUT A COMMISSIONER THAT WORKED FOR THE PEOPLE…THIS STINKS!
