Wilks paces Bulldog golfers

COEUR d’ALENE — Lake Wilks continues to go low for the Bulldog boys, once again leading the way with an 83 at the Lake City Invitational held Monday at the rainy and cold Coeur d’Alene Golf Club.

Damien Fitzpatrick was right behind with an 85 in his second round back, but much of the team struggled around the greens with chipping.

“Lake was just hitting it solid, right down the middle,” said Bulldogs head coach Tom Tharp. “They came up short on a lot of second shots, and if they didn’t chip well, they were looking at bogey.”

Caroline Hawkins shot a 96 to lead the Bulldog girls, and was just six strokes off the medalist. But the performances that caught Tharp’s eye were turned in by Cheyenne Nicholson (118) and Morgan Hogue (122), each of whom posted a career low round.

“Morgan attributed it to her new driver,” claimed Tharp. “Cheyenne is starting to putt and chip better. That’s usually the last thing that comes along.”

The sores are important, because right now the Bulldogs are looking for that fourth scorer and are very tight with Lakeland in the team race at districts.

The team hopes to get out on the Idaho Club on Wednesday, for some much needed practice as the season nears crunch time.

Sandpoint is at the Post Falls Invite on Monday, which will be played at the Highlands Golf Course.
