Local swimmer qualifies for Junior Nationals

(Courtesy photo) Senior swimmer Payton Bokowy, pictured with coach Mike Brosnahan, represented Sandpoint recently at the 2017 USA Swimming Futures Meet in Santa Clara, California, setting a couple of personal bests and qualifying for the prestigious Junior Nationals in the process. Against some of the top youth swimmers in the nation, Bokowy was 20th in the 50 free, 41st in the 100 free and 45th in the 100 back, setting personal bests in the 50 free (23.96) and 100 back (1:07.69). Her time in the 50 free was low enough to earn a coveted spot in the Winter Junior Nationals, held in Iowa in December, and may qualify her for the Scholastic All-American award. There were less than 600 female high school swimmers to earn that award last year in the U.S. Bokowy will now turn her attention to the high school season, where she’ll look to add to her state title collection in her final year for the Bulldogs.
