Season on the line tonight for Bulldogs

Hellen Merwin, hitting, Kaitlan Ward, left, and Grace Kirscher, at the net, will host the rival Lakeland Hawks tonight at 6 p.m. at Les Rogers Court in the loser-out opener of the 4A Region 1 volleyball tournament. The No. 2 seed Bulldogs split with No. 3 Lakeland during the regular season, winning last week in straight sets after falling in five in the first meeting. Led by the power hitting of Grace Hicks, Shelby Kluver, Jazmin Stockton and Jenny Slaveck, the deft setting of the attack by Hicks and Breuner, a solid block put up by Kirscher and Hicks, and the scrappy back line defense of Ward, Lilly Anderson and Kluver, the resurgent Bulldogs (12-17) will look to extend their season tonight with a home win. “Our plan is to continue building on the momentum we created last week,” said head coach Erin Roos. “We turned a big corner in confidence and cohesion, and I’m excited to see we are peaking at the right time.” The winner of tonight’s match advances to face No. 1 seed Moscow on Thursday night at the Bear Den, and a chance to play for a district championship and state berth.
