OLDTOWN — A motorist was reportedly injured and had to be extricated Tuesday after wedging their vehicle on the pedestrian and bicycle path on the Oldtown Bridge on U.S. Highway 2.

The incident happened shortly after 2 p.m., forcing a temporary closure of the pathway on the south side of the span over the Pend Oreille River. The path reopened shortly after 4 p.m., the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office said in Nixle notification.

The name of the motorist was not released. There were reports that a medical condition caused the motorist to drive onto the path, which has an outer metal guardrail and a interior concrete barrier segregating it from eastbound highway traffic.

“The exact cause is still under investigation, but the preliminary investigative information leads us to believe it could be a medical issue,” Undersheriff Ror Lakewold said on Tuesday night.

In addition to sheriff’s deputies, personnel from the West Pend Oreille Fire District and Bonner EMS responded to the call.
