SANDPOINT — The rainbows were biting Tuesday as the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club’s Thanksgiving Derby neared the midway point.

“The long-awaited rainbow bite happened today,” board member Dave Gillespie said in an email announcing Tuesday’s results. “As there is a high wind warning for (today) there may not be many added to the list until the weekend as there is no derby fishing on Thanksgiving Day.”

Denton McGlothlin of Sagle nabbed a 23.68-pound, 36 1/2-inch beauty on Tuesday to claim the top spot in the rainbow trout adult division, with Mike Blackstone of Sagle joining him on the leaderboard in the division with a 20.16-pound, 35 1/2-inch rainbow. Mike Mitale of Coeur d’Alene, who hooked a 19.44-pound, 33 3/4-inch fish Monday, dropped to third.
