Share extra produce with community's hungry

| July 24, 2006 9:00 PM

The gardens of Bonner County are producing a bounty of vegetables and berries this summer, often more than the gardeners and their families can eat. The food banks in our county can use any fresh produce that we can donate.

The Bonner County Master Gardeners, together with the Garden Writers of America, are sponsoring a chapter of Plant A Row for the Hungry, challenging local gardeners to donate as much produce as possible this season. To date, the Bonner Community Food Center has received more than 200 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables from area gardeners. This is a good start, but a fraction of what is needed. Alice Wallace, director of the Community Food Center, has said that they can store and distribute a ton or more of fresh produce per month.

To get involved, deliver your produce to one of the three area food banks and ask for a receipt. The total of the receipts helps track the amount of food donated.

Bonner Community Food Bank is located at 921 N. Fifth in Sandpoint, and is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

West Bonner County Food Bank, located at 103 N. Washington in Oldtown, accepts donations on weekdays from 10 am until noon.

Clark Fork Food Bank, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Clark Fork, is open on Wednesdays from 10 am to 2 p.m..

Let's all share our harvests to help those in need. Thank you.
