United States should not compromise its heritage

| March 29, 2006 8:00 PM

To all of those conflicted about the immigration issue here is something to think about.

We must always remember how the United States got to be such an attractive place to live and work. The freedom we enjoy came at a price and our standards of living are the result of a lot of sweat and tears. We have earned and paid for our heritage. And we have a right to place a value on it.

To grant those rights to those who choose to ignore our requirements for citizenship is to demean and devalue the contributions made by all those who have gone before. That those who come here are willing to work should be a given somewhat as being honest. That we subsidize illegal occupation is insulting to all of us.

Every member of our society should have a basis in law and our only promise should be opportunity with no other rights or privileges pending naturalization. And there should not be a legitimate second language. Why is it reasonable to compromise our heritage?
