Mire, Lovell sizzle at Lake City Invitational

| May 1, 2006 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE — Senior Ashleigh Mire shot 90 and won medalist at the Lake City Invitational on Monday, keeping her ball straight and avoiding the trouble that lies among the huge pine trees lining every fairway at Cd'A Public.

"She was great off the tee, her approach play was good and she hit every fairway," said coach Jim Alsager, who noted Mire's putter wasn't hot or she could have gone even lower.

Ashley Burke had a solid round for the girls' team, shooting 97 on a very windy day where trouble was easy to find.

Joey Lovell scorched a 74 to lead a balanced boys' team, and missed medaling by one stroke after two three putts on the back nine offset a one-under par front nine. All four scorers on the Bulldogs were under 90, consistency that should pay dividends as they head toward state.

"To have the top four guys in the 80s or better is exactly what we need," said boys' coach Mike Keough. "The guys are pretty pumped up right now, it's starting to look like we might qualify for state."
