Benefit set for caucus delegate

SANDPOINT - Adrian Murillo takes his duties as a delegate to the Democratic state convention very seriously.

Murillo, a poet from Sagle, has been involved in grassroots democratic activism for years, and when he was given an opportunity at February's caucus to represent Bonner County Democrats at the party's June 12 convention, he knew he could not pass it up.

The only problem is coming up with the money - an estimated $750 - he will need for airfare to Boise, a hotel room and food.

To solve that problem, Murillo teamed up with his friend, grant writer Nancy Gerth, to create an event that will both raise money for his trip and give local Democrats a chance to express their hopes and concerns about the content of the Democratic party platform, which will be drawn up at the convention.

Titled “Poetry and Politics,” the April 18 event at Foster's Crossing will feature live music, poetry readings, finger food and an open forum for political discussion.

“We need to bring some balance back to Idaho politics,” Murillo said. “The time is right for some real changes.”

At the convention, Murillo will support Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., but even more than his allegiance to the upstart junior senator, he said he is making the trip to be a voice for the hundreds of local Democrats he is charged with representing.

Having seen him at various Democratic events, Gerth offered her support because she believes Murillo's dedication to Obama, his intelligence and his thoughtfulness should not be tossed aside because he is unable to afford the trip.

“Some people can't afford to go, and we could lose an important voice if we don't support them,” Gerth said.
