James A. 'Jim' Sawhill, 70

James A. "Jim" Sawhill, 70, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Funeral services will held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at the Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel with full military honors. Burial will be held at the Pinecrest Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008.

Jim was born on April 13, 1937, in Siebert, Colo., the son of Agie and Opal (Chrisman) Sawhill. He grew up in Colorado and moved with his family to the Morton area in 1947, attended the Morton and Long and Seneacquoteen schools and the Sandpoint junior and senior high schools, graduating from high school in 1955.

He worked for the Spokane International Railroad following high school and enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 12, 1956. His duty stations included San Diego, Camp Pendleton, and Iwakuni, Japan.

He returned from overseas in 1958 and was stationed in Barstow, Calif. He reenlisted and was stationed on Okinawa, Japan. In 1964 while stationed in Camp Pendleton, Calif., with a Logistics Support Unit, he reenlisted and was transferred to Tehran, Iran, Damascus, Syria and Paris, France, as a Marine security guard. His other duty stations included Camp Lejune, N.C., Guantanimo Bay, Cuba, Okinawa, Japan and Vietnam.

He returned to Jacksonville, Fla., and was transferred to Seoul, South Korea with the Joint Military Advisory Command, overseeing the Korean military. \He returned to the United States in Cincinnati, Ohio, as an inspector instructor staff sergeant and retired in 1976, serving over 20 years with the U.S. Marine Corps. His citations included seven Good Conduct Medals. He returned to Sandpoint to care for his parents.

Jim worked locally for Michigan Green House, Nieman's Floral and Second Avenue Pizza, making daily deliveries.

His hobbies included gardening, playing the guitar, hunting, fishing and jogging.

Survivors include a brother, Robert Sawhill of Sandpoint; and two sisters, Dixie Gouge of Lincoln City, Ore., and Betty Jackson of Puyallup, Wash. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nellie McCabe.
