Bulldog wrestlers hammer Lakeland

| February 8, 2008 8:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Good things are indeed worth waiting for.

The Sandpoint wrestling team had to wait until Friday night to host its first and only home meet of the season, then proceeded to post a convincing 50-23 win over Lakeland in duals action during Senior Night at Sandpoint High School.

Leonard Fister (145 pounds), Paul Marienau (160), Jacob Knaggs (171), Garret Belgarde (103), Timmy Pepperdine (112), Jacob Porter (119) and Colter Sigman (125) each registered pins for Sandpoint, but the match of the night took place at 135 pounds, where Lakeland's Kyle McCrite won a 15-12 decision over Sid Winter in an intense match with multiple lead changes. Winter held a 12-10 lead late in the match before McCrite, last year's state runner up at 119 pounds, scored five unanswered points for the win.

"I really like the effort Sid made coming off the flue," said Bulldogs coach Kirk Hartzell, noting Winter learned a valuable lesson in the loss. "He could have went for one point and the win, instead he went for five and the glory. He's really developed over the season, and this gives him confidence that he can wrestle at the state level "

Hartzell also praised the wrestling of Fister and Knaggs, calling their pins both dominant and confidence-building. He was also happy with his heavies, as both Terry Taylor (215) and Austin Posey posted major decisions.

"Those could have gone either way," said Hartzell of Taylor and Posey's wins. "They were no where near that level at the beginning of the season."

Pepperdine, Marienau, Will Hughes, and Sam Sisson were the four seniors honored before the match.

Sandpoint is at Coeur d'Alene on Tuesday, the final dual before Regionals on Saturday.
