Former Sandpoint resident making good impression as Alaska's governor

Did you know Alaska Gov. Sarah Heath Palin was born in Sandpoint? Her father was teaching in Bonner County when she was born here on Feb. 11, 1964.

Former teacher, state senator and husband of Susan Kiebert, Kermit Kiebert recently unearthed photos of Sarah Louise Heath and her proud father taken back in the day.

He recently mailed the photos back to her father, Chuck Heath, who lives in Alaska and is busy helping with Todd and Sarah Palin’s six children.

Heath is a character and has been known to wear a T-shirt with “My governor is hotter than your governor” inscribed on it.

Sarah was a Bonner County resident for four months before her father and mother moved to Alaska to teach at Skagway.

Palin has parlayed her common sense and uncommon beauty to become a rising star in the national GOP front.

She is the 11th governor of Alaska and is the youngest as well as the only female to hold that office.

She also graduated from the University of Idaho in journalism. She had raised eyes by winning beauty contests and she was also first runner-up in the Miss Alaska pageant a few years ago.

She has been mentioned in certain circles as the perfect vice presidential candidate for John McCain. She has my vote if she runs!

Congrats to Morgan Wills for completing a challenging year as editor of Sandpoint High School’s nationally acclaimed school newspaper, The Cedar Post.

Even though a lack of advertising and the fact that a few advertisers wouldn’t pay their bills to be in the Cedar Post might be seen as a disappointment, Morgan and her crew made the most of it and learned some real, life lessons.

The CP crew held numerous fundraisers to keep their paper afloat this year and even appealed to me to print the Cedar Post free(!?!) one time so they could catch up financially. How could I say no?

Nice job Cedar Posties and good luck to all of you.

Speaking of good kids Š The Health Occupations program at SHS recently qualified for the national competition to be held June 17-22 in Dallas.

Desi Hutchings, Brittany Groenhout, Adrianna Bucholtz and Rashelle Klontz have raised money selling cookie dough, delivering phone books as well as several other activities to help pay for the trip but the deadline is looming and each girl still needs to raise about $800.

If you are in a quandary about how to spend that economic stimulus check, why not invest in these young ladies? Most of them are considering careers in nursing or health sciences, and we all know we need more health care professionals.

Contact Desi Hutchings at 255-2314 or 610-8637 or you can mail a check to Sandpoint HOSA c/o Team Desi, Box 565, Kootenai, Idaho, 83840.

A belated congratulations for 80-year-old Dr. Richard Neuder who finished Bloomsday in first place in the 80 and over category. He has run 20-plus Bloomsdays!

Thanks to the Sandpoint Lions Club for putting up the 200 US flags in and around Sandpoint on Memorial Day and all national holidays.

This hard-working group has been putting up flags for more than 20 years.

Unfortunately, there was at least one jerk who decided to take it upon himself or herself to pull down one of the flags near City Glass, spray painted graffiti on it and to threw the flag into a dumpster on Memorial Day.

If you are reading this and did this dumb act, the Lions would like to talk with you about patriotism and respect.

Longtime Lion John Hunt was mad when he brought in the desecrated flag to the Bee office Monday.

A few years back, 20 flags were taken down by vandals. We wrote about it in the paper, and checks flooded in to replace the $35 flags and much more.

The Lions have extra flags so they don’t need money this time, but they are concerned by what seems to be a rising tide of vandalism associated with this great Sandpoint tradition.
