Kovalchuk leads Bulldogs at IEL Championships

COEUR d’ALENE — Susan Kovalchuk cleared 9-3 to win the girls pole vault, the lone Bulldog to win an event at the competitive Inland Empire League Championships Thursday at Lake City High School.

The Sandpoint girls finished second in both the 4X100 and 4X200 relays, finishing six in the seven team meet and second among the 4A schools. Elli Kiselica was third in the high jump, Christina Johnson third in the discus, Jennie Meulenberg fourth in the triple jump and Hope Woodruff fifth in the 800 to round out the Bulldog girls in the top five.

Danny Pfeifer finished second in the 1,600 (4:38) and Brandon Hawkins second in the 800 (2:02), both turning in one of their strongest runs of the season to lead the Bulldogs boys, who also finished sixth overall.

Mike Hubbard grabbed second in the high jump (6-0), freshman Chris Turnbull posted a surprising third place finish in the 100, Jimmy Mathews was third in the 3,200 and Sean Hogan was fourth in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 110 highs to round out the top five finishers among the boys.

Select Sandpoint athletes will be at the All-Star Meet in Post Falls next Thursday.
