NEWPORT — A Newport woman has been charged with attempted murder/first-degree assault after police say she shot her nephew Wednesday following an argument over a vehicle.

Nelda J. Treadwell, 74, of Newport, made her first appearance in court Thursday and is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

An arraignment date has yet to be set.

Treadwell was charged after deputies responded Wednesday to a home on Sunnyside Drive in an area about six miles north of Newport following reports that a man had been shot.

Upon arrival, deputies located Treadwell’s nephew, Tory J. Duty, 43, of Highlands, Calif.,  who had been shot in the abdomen with a small caliber handgun. Duty was conscious and alert and was taken by ambulance to Newport Community Hospital.

He was later flown to the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, where he was upgraded from serious condition Wednesday night to satisfactory condition Thursday afternoon.
