Idaho may be red, but Sandpoint is diverse

| January 10, 2012 6:00 AM

Jan. 6 was the religious high holiday for Eastern Christians. I mark the end of the season as I enjoy my feast Jan. 6. I hope everyone had a good season, however you chose to celebrate it.

Last month, I wrote a letter published in the Bonner County Daily Bee, the Reader, and read on the local radio in which I suggested we consider the other person when extending a season’s greeting. It was not proper to use your greeting to make your personal political and religious statement.

I was surprised at the strong attack I received from our local right wing radio talk show host. I assume his point was that “Merry Christmas” was the battle cry of the right wing and people who considered alternatives were not in line with North Idaho values. I was, of course, called a liberal.

People usually identify their right-wing mind by calling others liberals. Then everyone who attends my place of worship was insulted. I was surprised Blue Sky Broadcasting allowed such disrespect in our community.

My patriotism also was attacked. I assume because of my anti-war writings. Then a story about my conduct was made up. When the story was challenged, our radio host claimed he could get 15 retired policemen (SPORTS members) to back him up.

What an insult to the retired police community to suggest they would bear false witness to support their right wing colleague. To the best of my knowledge, none have come foreword but a bit scary to think anyone in the radio audience believed it was possible.

Idaho may be the most red state and North Idaho may be known as the right wing capital but that is not true of Sandpoint. I find this to be a cosmopolitan diverse community.

Most of the comments received from my last two letters were positive; but, the comments came from people who know me and there are few right wing minded people in my circles.
