Teenager drowns in Boundary County

MOYIE SPRINGS — A 16-year-old girl drowned Thursday at the confluence of the Moyie and Kootenai rivers in Boundry County.

Newsbf.com identified the victim as Janna Mong, a Bonners Ferry resident and student at the Kootenai Valley Mennonite School.

The online news outlet reported that Mong was swimming with family at the Twin Rivers Canyon Resort.

A family member reportedly realized that Mong was unaccounted for, prompting a frantic search.

A young man remembered where he saw Mong dive in and pulled her to shore, where resuscitation efforts began.

Mong was taken to Boundary Community Hospital, but the attempt to revive her failed, according to the published media account.

Boundary County Sheriff Greg Sprungl declined to discuss the drowning out of respect for the family.

Moyie Springs Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ken English declined to comment, citing a deeply-held and abiding distrust of news reporters.

A 16-year-old boy drowned at the resort in 2009 after disappearing in a water hole near the confluence of the two Boundary County rivers.
