An idea whose time has come

| March 1, 2012 6:00 AM

As I understand it, the three Bonner County commissioners are paid by the taxpayers $56,000 each. Here’s an idea that’s worth considering, let’s have five commissioners and pay them with the same money that the three are now getting. That would work out to $33,600 each per year — more than the vast majority in Bonner County make.

A benefit of a five-person commission is that it would be impossible for two of ‘em to run roughshod over the county’s government and use it to force their agenda on the citizens of Bonner County. In other words, it would be more difficult for two commissioners to hold the county government hostage.

Another problem with the Bonner County commissioners is how poorly they publicize their meetings. This especially appears to be the case with the Property Rights Council. The commissioners prefer closed-door Tammany Hall like secret meetings and that the public stay away. It’s time the people of Bonner County start attending the commissioner’s meetings and holding them accountable.

The commissioners need to realize that they are the servants of Bonner County’s taxpayers and not their masters.
