Daily Bee wins AP honors for excellence

| August 29, 2013 7:00 AM

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Salt Lake Tribune, the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello and the Bonner County Daily Bee in Sandpoint were named the winners Wednesday in the general excellence category of the Utah Idaho Spokane Associated Press Association’s annual news contest.

In other top categories, the staff of The Salt Lake Tribune won the William H. Cowles III Memorial Award for public service reporting for their story about the troubled public-sector broadband Internet network supported by 11 cities.

Adam Eschbach of the Idaho Press-Tribune in Nampa won Best of Show for his photograph “Birds of Prey.”

In all, the Daily Bee won 19 awards, including nine first-place honors.

The newspapers competed in three size divisions: for newspapers over 50,000 circulation; papers of 10,000 to 50,000 circulation; and papers under 10,000 circulation. Entries for this year’s contest were judged by editors from AP newspapers in Arkansas and Montana.

Here is a list of winners in Division 1 (circulation up to 10,000):
