Bulldogs best Badgers, earn B Cup trophy

| December 20, 2013 6:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Five Bulldog wrestlers registered pins, leading the Bulldogs to a 45-30 win over Bonners Ferry on Thursday night in a nonleague wrestling dual at Les Rogers Court.

Before the biggest and loudest crowd at Sandpoint in years, Tanner McNelley (132), Lewis Dunton (145), Casey Randles (170), Jacob Williams (182) and Josh Travers (220) won by pin to lead the Bulldogs to the first dual victory over the Badgers since 2009, and possession of the coveted B Cup trophy.

Freshman Owen Stebbins scored a quality 7-1 win over Quinn Cummings, and Tyler Presser held a commanding 8-1 lead over Parker Davis before getting caught on his back and pinned in the second period. Both matches caught the eye of Sandpoint head coach Mike Randles.

“Owen, a freshman beating a senior state placer, that’s a positive situation for the future,” said Randles, who felt Presser also shined in defeat. “In just his first or second varsity match, he was one mistake away from beating a returning state placer.”

The Badgers jumped out to an early lead in the dual, led by pins from Jaeger Schnuerle (120), Riley Wall (126), Mat Tucker (138) and Parker Davis (152). The Bulldogs won five of the final six matches to turn the tide.

“The young kids stepped up at the light weights. They came out and gave it a whirl,” said Badgers coach Conrad Garner. “Then we ran into some men.”

The Bulldogs will take seven wrestlers down to Tri-State at North Idaho College this weekend, led by Nash, McNelley, Lewis Dunton, Mahonri Hunsaker, Stebbins, Randles, Williams and Travers.
