In reality, threats of gunfire do not work

| November 5, 2013 8:00 PM

Thinking about the proposal to arm our local schools, I ran into a video that documents a trial program very similar to that suggested as a deterrent to gun violence in our schools. Please take a look at it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QjZY3WiO9s

Here’s the gist of it.

Several volunteers with varied levels of firearm familiarity were given the sort of training suggested by LPOSD. They were given concealed carry holsters and taught to draw their pistols and to shoot accurately.

Paint bullets and protective clothing were used.

Then, they were put into a classroom situation, armed with their concealed pistols and suddenly attacked by an armed gunman who broke into the classroom shooting.

In every case, the defender was completely overwhelmed and failed to stop the invader. They all “died” violent deaths — covered in paint splotches.

Countering the threat of gunfire with threats of counter gunfire is clearly an idea that would not stand up in the real world where the attacker is blessed with tactical surprise.
