City revises leak penalties

SANDPOINT — City officials agree that an accidental water leak shouldn’t break the bank for responsible homeowners.

A council decision last Wednesday expanded the charge adjustment policy for water leaks, assisting homeowners who would otherwise pay hefty penalties for gallons they didn’t use. The revision lowered the leak threshold from 200,000 gallons to 100,000 gallons — but only from November to March. Otherwise, the fee adjustment is only available for leaks spilling more than 200,000 gallons. Furthermore, homeowners get a break only if they take immediate action to repair the problem.
