Cold shooting costs Bulldog girls at state opener

| February 21, 2014 6:00 AM

MERIDIAN — The good news for the Sandpoint girls from the 4A state tournament opener on Thursday at Mountain View High School was jumping out to a 12-9 lead over Pocatello early in the second quarter.

The bad news for the Bulldogs was that there wasn’t much good news after that, as Pocatello would score 21 of the next 25 points en route to a decisive 48-34 win.

The Bulldogs (13-8) were plagued by ice cold shooting, making 14 of 56 attempts for just 25 percent for the night. The 34 points scored, many coming when the game was out of reach, was a season-low for the Bulldogs, as the nerves of playing in state proved tough to overcome.

Hailey Olin led the way with 13 points, but 11 of them came late in the fourth quarter after the Bulldogs trailed by more than 20 points. Olin added 11 rebounds and three steals, and Madi Schoening seven points, eight rebounds and three assists in defeat.

Maryah Delgado hit a 3-pointer and scored the Bulldogs’ first five points, with the Bulldogs building a three point lead early in the second quarter. They had trouble scoring after that, managing just six points over the next 13 plus minutes of action, as the Indians (14-10) seized the lead and the game.

Sandpoint moves in to the consolation bracket, and will face the loser of Skyview (22-1) and Burley (13-9) today at 2 p.m. The game will be webcast live on Idahosports.com, and Chris Chatburn will have the call live on AM1400.
