Bulldogs can't stop Louie-McGee, T-Wolves

COEUR d’ALENE — The Sandpoint Bulldogs had a difficult time containing the speedy, shifty Jerry Louie-McGee of Lake City — but then, they haven’t been alone in that attempt the past couple of seasons.

Louie-McGee caught two touchdown passes and ran for two more — some of the scores of the highlight-reel variety — as the Timberwolves defeated Sandpoint 54-25 in nonleague play Friday night.

“It was a two-score game a lot of the game. I think the game was closer than the final outcome,” Sandpoint coach Satini Puailoa said. “But they’ve got a couple of special guys (Louie-McGee and running back Connor Newby), and it’s hard to simulate that. He (Louie-McGee) has done that to a lot of people. We had him boxed in a couple of times, and he just takes off. It’s good when you’ve got those guys.”

Louie-McGee caught four passes for 147 yards, including touchdown grabs of 50 and 78 yards for Lake City (5-1). He rushed seven times for 134 yards, including TD runs of 47 and 58 yards.

Sandpoint (3-3) hung close early. But in a key sequence early in the second quarter, the Bulldogs had a 42-yard touchdown run by Tyler Harris, that would have closed Lake City’s lead to 20-16, called back by a holding penalty. On the next play, backup quarterback Davan Norris was intercepted by Sam Slusser. Lake City tacked on a touchdown late in the half for a 26-10 halftime lead, and led by at least two scores the rest of the way.

“But I thought our kids competed,” Puailoa said. “We’ll learn from this. We had some guys, I think, made some bad reads, but part of that’s Lake City. We stopped them a lot of times, and we moved the ball a lot of times. We just were inconsistent. But when you’re playing good people, and you don’t execute at a high level, it gets magnified.”

Sandpoint opens 4A Inland Empire League play next week at Lakeland.
