Bengals take down cold-shooting Bulldogs

| January 21, 2015 6:00 AM

LEWISTON — The Bulldog boys never lack for effort, employing a full court defensive style and more often than not winning the battle for loose balls.

But hustle or defense wasn’t the problem in a nonleague game at Lewiston on Monday night, offense was, as the Bulldogs fell 48-32 to the Bengals at Lewiston High School.

Carlos Collado scored eight points to lead the Bulldogs (5-9), who managed just six points in both the first and third quarters and could never find the right rhythm offensively.

“The intensity and enthusiasm was there. We defended well and rebounded better than our previous games. We defended well enough to win,” said Bulldogs head coach Kent Leiss. “What really hurt us was our poor shooting percentage and too many turnovers. We just couldn’t buy a bucket for long stretches. Once we cut out turnovers and shoot better, we will be able to knock off some good teams.”

Cooper Spalding and Dylan Kuzmich each added five points, but it wasn’t enough as 5A Lewiston (7-8) built a 39-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Sandpoint is at Lakeland on Thursday.
