Edlund, Dewey and Sundquist earn All-IEL honors

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint sophomore Caleb Edlund flirted with the school record for batting average, before finishing the season with a scintillating .472 average, earning the Newcomer of the Year Award on the 4A All-Inland Empire League baseball team, as voted on recently by the league’s coaches.

“He is such a great testament to work ethic. He put in the work, got the training and the results came,” said Bulldogs head coach Scott Fitchett of Edlund. “His hard work deserves the recognition and if he continues to work like he did this past year, I have no doubt he will break the school record for average and will probably be one of the greatest hitters in program history.”

Sophomore Talon Dewey batted .372 to earn a spot in the outfield, and the hard-throwing lefty also led the team in saves.

“He is a great example of the combination of great talent, work ethic and being coachable,” lauded Fitchett. “He will become one of the best players in the entire area regardless of classification by the time he is done here.”

Junior first baseman Paul Sundquist raked at a .390 clip, leading the team in both home runs and RBIs, while providing a solid defensive glove in the field.

“Our MVP, emotional leader and one of the best competitors we have,” described Fitchett. “He is largely responsible for the turn around the program is experiencing and I am confident he will lead the team to a state tournament next year.”
