Aug. 7, 1966 — CITY COACHES WIN

The city coaches made it three in a row over their country cousins Saturday night when they downed them 9-5 in the annual coaches baseball benefit game at Memorial Field.

Bill Adams pitched for the city fellers, giving up just five hits while striking out 13 in seven innings. He issued only two walks, both of them to Ken Beaudoin. Both men are coaches at the junior high school during the school year which raised some suspicion of collusion.

Wayne Hawkins started on the mound for the country nine, but yielded to Corny Poelstra later in the game. Poelstra has pitched in every coaches’ game since they started several years ago.

Aug. 7, 1916 — GOOD NEWS FOR BATHERS

The lake is now down almost 11 feet lower than the high water mark. The drop is slower now than at first, but is steady. The bathing beach east of the N.P. is now several feet above the water, but there is still a channel between the beach and the mainland two or three feet deep. Within about a week, the beach can be reached on foot, and at present there is a good beach available on the west side of the railway, known as “Weil’s Island.” Also on the shore east of the railroad is a narrow strip of bare sand, where bathers may disport themselves in the intervals between wettings.

HERE AND AROUND ABOUT

There was no meeting of the city council on Tuesday night, there being no quorum present. Most people were at the concert given by the New York City Marine band at the Chautauqua.

Despite the band attraction in the Chautauqua tent, the Gem Theatre reports capacity houses Tuesday, when Charlie Chaplin was featured.
