Mr. Payne stated in a letter to the editor recently that “... the level of school funding affects (school employees’) wages and job security” and therefore they should not be able to vote in the upcoming levy.

Mr. Payne, please check your facts, and stop spreading ignorance. The facilities levy cannot be used for anything but the repair and building of facilities. The state of Idaho does not fund school buildings, their repair, or creation. This is a shame, but that means it falls on the local community. In addition, as one of the largest employers in the county, the school district provides jobs for a good percentage of the taxpayers residing here. You don’t think they have the right to vote where their taxes go?

I am a proud Lake Pend Oreille School District employee and a proud member of this community, and I can tell you that I have carefully read all of the reports and estimates (available online, in mass mailings, at the school district office, in the paper, or via conversation with any district official), and have found them to be sound. I teach my students (our future leaders) that they must thoroughly examine their conclusions and back them up with facts because logical fallacies weaken their arguments and spread false information. The members of this community are free to vote any way they choose, but votes should be based on solid facts, not hearsay.
