Aug. 30, 1916 — NEW STUMP MACHINE

Two men representing the DeLong Boring machine were in the city the past week. The DeLong machine, which has been perfected over the past four years, is a device for boring holes into stumps, which are then fired and burned out.

A three-inch auger is used to bore a hole down the center into the taproot below ground level and then another hole at an angle from the side, just above ground level, to intersect the perpendicular hole. When the fire is started, the vertical hole acts as a chimney while the other supplies the draft. The superiority claimed for this method is that the fire is started below the ground so the lower part of the stump burns out first.
