June 21, 1916 — GUARD CALLED OUT

The men of Company A, Second Regiment, N.G.I., and the 2nd Regiment band began to assemble at the armory at the Rink Opera house and at the Band room in the city hall on Monday preparatory to departure for the Mexican border. President Wilson ordered mobilization of the National Guard for the work of border patrol on the Mexican border, thus freeing thousands of regulars for the use of Gen. Frederick Funston in Mexico. Under the present law the militia may only be used for service within the United States, but a new law reorganizing and enlarging the U.S. military forces goes into effect July 1.

The local company has been some men short of the required number recently but with the prospects for active service in Mexico there has been no difficulty whatever in recruiting the required strength — 65 men.

AFTER THE CALL

Monday’s misty rain which turned to snow about noon today dampened local military preparations with a somewhat detrimental effect to recruiting.

The open air drill on the high school campus last evening and a brief concert given by the band on Second and Main attracted a large number of people though the air was somewhat cold.

The boys in khaki are preparing to bid farewell with an informal dance at the Rink this evening. It is expected that a large crowd will attend.
