Students enjoy a sweet end to the year

Students at Naples Magnet School recently had a sweet end to their school year, according to teacher Tawny Macdonald, better known as “Mrs. M” to her second-grade students.

“I wanted to thank Jason Dillan, owner of Panhandle Cone and Coffee for making my students end-of-the-year field trip so sweet,” she said.

Macdonald said her second-grade class along with Mrs. Ross’ third-grade class participated in a writing contest she dreamed up last summer while working at her summer job at Panhandle Cone and Coffee in Sandpoint.

“Churn Your Writing Into Ice Cream” was a writing contest I dreamed up to fulfill state standards in a fun way, she said. Students had to create an ice cream flavor and persuade Dillan why their flavor should be chosen to be made at Panhandle Cone and Coffee.

“Some of the student’s reasons included, ‘my ice cream flavor will be so delicious customers will come back for more,’ ‘it will have real fruit in it so it will be healthy,’ and ‘I’ve never won a contest before so you should pick me please,’ ” she said.

Dillan gave the students a tour of the shop and showed them how he makes the ice cream. He even showed them how he uses a torch, to get the real flavor of a campfire marshmallow for the s’mores ice cream. After congratulating the winners of the contest each student was awarded an ice cream for participating in the contest.

The second-grade winner was Brody Atkins, who created Chocolate with Coconut and Chocolate Chips. The third-grade winner was Myah Francis, who created Vanilla Root Beer Swirl with Root Beer Chews.
