SANDPOINT — Saying he cannot walk away from the responsibility he feels to ensure the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office is more responsive to the county’s citizens, Terry Ford has announced a write-in campaign for sheriff.

Ford lost the Republican nomination for the sheriff’s post to incumbent Sheriff Daryl Wheeler, 4,508 to 3,547 — a difference of 961 votes. Wheeler won all precincts except Baldy, Dover and Sandpoint. Ford and Wheeler tied in the Humbird and Selle precincts.

Since the election, the retired Idaho State Police trooper said the ongoing support he’s received combined with a strong belief that integrity must be resort to the office lead to his decision to run as a write-in candidate in November’s general election.

“I will provide leadership where it is lacking, and collaborate with other agencies to strengthen my efforts,” Ford said in a press release announcing the decision.

His platform, first and foremost, is based on honesty, Ford said.

“The sheriff is the highest law enforcement authority in the county,” he said. “He must earn the citizens’ trust through hard work, leadership and service to a strong and dedicated team, while exhibiting steadfast allegiance to promises made. The sheriff must display professionalism and set a positive example for his subordinates.’

In addition, Ford said the sheriff must show sound judgment when making decisions, and be able to comprehend complex issues to provide proper response during urgent situations. Short- and long-term goals must be established and the sheriff must be willing to work in partnership with allied agencies.

“To accomplish his goals, the sheriff must be able to form a team of knowledgeable and skilled personnel that are not ‘yes men,’ ” Ford said.

He said he would address deficiencies and improprieties within the current sheriff’s administration, enforce laws releated to the use, sale and trafficking of illegal drugs, investigate crimes in a timely manner and ensure deputies and staff would receive the training they need.

“I will campaign this summer and fall on a platform solidly based on honesty, integrity, and service to the citizens of Bonner County,” Ford said. “My record as an Idaho State Police officer for over 25 years in northern Idaho stands on its own merit.”
