On her website, Heather Scott offers a variety of platitudes as her position on education policy (voteheatherscott.com/issues). Of course she starts with decrying federal money and influence in Idaho’s education system. The truth is federal money funding for K-12 education in Idaho is less than 15 percent. Without it, that money would have to be paid directly by us, the Idaho taxpayer.

But, Scott’s disdain for our education system doesn’t stop there. In the last legislative session she voted against 50 percent ($957 million) of all K-12 spending and the entire appropriation for higher education ($556 million). Fortunately she was in a very small minority. On top of that, she voted no for the last supplemental levy for the West Bonner County School District, a levy that represented 25 percent of the district’s budget. It also passed. Clearly she is out of step with most Idahoans and doesn’t support education.

Her opponent, Kate McAlister, has presented a strong program to support education aimed at preparing our kids for the jobs of both today and tomorrow. And, she not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. Kate serves on the North Idaho College education committee working to expand learning opportunities offered by NIC here in Bonner County. She also serves as vice chair of the board of the Forrest Bird Charter School in Sandpoint.

If our kids’ education is as important to you as it is to me, Kate McAlister is the rep we need in Boise.

Vote for Kate!
