Bulldogs hold their own against state power

SANDPOINT — When two of the fastest swimmers in the state get to go head-to-head in the pool, it adds a little extra buzz to any swim meet, and such was the case when Sandpoint’s Payton Bokowy and Coeur d’Alene’s Emily Dietz locked horns in the 50 and 100 free on Wednesday at the Sandpoint West Athletic Club.

Bokowy, the reigning two time state champ in both, was pushed in both races by her former teammate before reaching the wall first each time. The Vikings, one of the top swim teams in the state, won both team duals as the top two teams in North Idaho squared off. Bulldog head coach Mike Brosnahan said Bokowy, who often wins easily, knew going into the race that she would be pushed, and raced aggressively.

“Payton tends to be a back-half swimmer,” said Brosnahan, noting she likes to turn it on later in the race. “She took it out right from the start.”

One of the best races of the day came in the very first event, when Sandpoint edged Coeur d’Alene in the 200 medley relay, setting a competitive tone early.

“When you go up against a big team, you like to make that first impression,” said Brosnahan. “We won the first event. It shows diversity, power and strength.”

Sierra Speakman won the 400 free and Seth Bamer the 200 free to notch a couple of solid wins for Sandpoint, which is at the Kroc Center on Saturday, Oct. 15.
