Bulldogs seeking first win against GSL Titans

| September 2, 2016 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — For the second straight week, teams with first year coaches will lock horns when University High School visits Sandpoint tonight in the second to last game ever at the current Barlow Stadium.

Adam Daniel will lead the Titans in their season opener, while George Yarno will be seeking his first win in his team’s second game, after falling to Post Falls 22-7 last week.

The Titans graduated 16 starters, a number similar to the Bulldogs, so both teams figure to experience a learning curve as the season progresses. If there is an edge, it’s that the Bulldogs (0-1) have had a week to correct the mistakes that every team makes in season openers.

Last year the Titans won 43-23, and the Bulldogs will be looking to not just avenge that defeat, but forge an identity as new varsity players settle into their roles.

One of the bright spots last week was the punting of Walker Jacobson, who helped the Bulldogs win the field position battle with seven strong punts that yielded little return. It’s what coaches call “hidden yards,” and while they don’t show up in the stat sheet they often decide games.

Jacobson was also busy on defense, leading the team in tackles, while Zack Alamillo made some great stops on the line.

University, a 4A Greater Spokane League school, traditionally boasts a big front seven on defense, and the Bulldogs will be looking to get running back Levi Irish going on offense. With heavy rain in the forecast, a power back like Irish could play a big role by keeping the chains moving.

With the possibility of a wet ball and grass, ball security will also be important, as snaps and handoffs become more difficult.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Barlow Stadium. The game will also be called live on AM1400 and FM 103.
