Ceremonies to mark 9/11 anniversary

COEUR d’ALENE — Patriot Day ceremonies for the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be held today, Sunday and Monday in Kootenai County. There are no ceremonies planned in Bonner County.

n The city of Hayden will hold its inaugural Patriot Day ceremony on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. at the PFC Robert J. Gordon Veterans Memorial Plaza at City Hall, 8930 N. Government Way.

It will include a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace," presentation of colors, the national anthem sung by Veterans Commission member Dave Sheldon and a welcome by Mayor Steve Griffitts.

During the ceremony, speakers will include Kootenai County Sheriff Ben Wolfinger, Pat Riley from Northern Lakes Fire Protection District and a member of the military, who will all say a few words about what the day means to their organizations. The ceremony will conclude with taps and the retiring of colors.

n The Coeur d'Alene police and fire departments will hold a remembrance ceremony on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Fallen Heroes Plaza at Cherry Hill Park off of 15th Street north of Interstate 90.

n Patriot Day activities will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 143 in Post Falls. There will be food, drinks, music and raffles. Donations will be accepted for the food. The public is invited.

A ceremony will also be held at 9 a.m. on Monday at City Hall, 408 N. Spokane St.

It will include a moment of silence, lowering of the U.S. flag to half staff, a traditional bell ringing for fallen firefighters and the laying of a wreath and taps for all victims of Sept. 11.

Post Falls Police, Kootenai County Fire and Rescue, American Legion Post 143 and the Patriot Guard Riders will participate. Also on the program are Mayor Ron Jacobson, Eagle Scout Tyler Rochford and Blind Veterans Association National President Dale Stamper.
