DAR announces scholarship, essay contest information

| September 13, 2016 1:00 AM

Wild Horse Trail Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution has announced that the Good Citizens Scholarship and Essay information is now available to all area high school seniors. The deadline for submission is Oct. 3, 2016. Program and essay contest materials are available from each participating school’s counseling department.

The Daughters of the American Revolution’s Good Citizens Essay and Scholarship Contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship: dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. The program is open to all senior class students enrolled in accredited public and private secondary schools who are in good standing with their state boards of education. United States citizenship is not required. The student selected as a school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the qualities of dependability; service; leadership; and patriotism to an outstanding degree.

Each school selects one senior who has demonstrated to an exemplary degree the qualities of a good citizen. Only one student per year may be honored as a school’s DAR Good Citizen. This student is then eligible to enter the DAR Good Citizens scholarship contest, if he/she wishes. The scholarship award is a minimum of $150.

DAR Good Citizens who enter the scholarship contest are eligible for awards beyond the chapter level in state and national competition. Two national winners are eventually selected and invited to Washington, D.C., to attend Continental Congress.

The National Society has over 25 other additional scholarships available to high school seniors and students already attending college. Scholarship amounts range from $1000 to $5000 and some are renewable. You may find information and all forms for each scholarship at http://www.dar.org/national-society/scholarships.

The applications for a National DAR Scholarship must be emailed no later than February 10, 2017, so apply early.

Interested students should contact their school’s counseling department or national DAR scholarship contact, Melanie Pereira, lablovermp@gmail.com.
