Fall in love with community's entertainment options

SANDPOINT — It’s officially fall and the roster of events is as colorful as the local landscape.

Rock Creek Alliance holds its annual confab — or should we call it a fun-fab? — tonight at MickDuff’s Beer Hall and world-renown pianist George Winston takes the stage at the Panida Friday evening. On Saturday, the Panida participates in National Arthouse Theater Day (see sidebar) and Lost Horse Press hosts 100,000 Poets for Change — an open mic event at Evans Brothers Coffee.

Also Saturday, get your dancin’ shoes on to celebrate National Ballroom dance Week with a social dance and free lessons at Community Hall.

Thursday, Sept. 22

Rock Creek Alliance Party

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., Sandpoint

Time: 5:30-8 p.m., Thursday

Love your lake? Come celebrate it as the Rock Creek Alliance hosts its annual party and meeting. Tasty catered appetizers, no-host bar and fabulous music by Ben & Cadie of Harold’s IGA, plus the latest news on the ongoing fight to save our lake.

Whetherman

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m., Thursday

Whetherman is the moniker of Nicholas Williams, a seasoned bucolic folk singer-songriter who inspires laid back scenes with earnest and poetic lyrics, percussive guitar, rolling harmonica and timeless melodic vocals.

Friday, Sept. 23

George Winston

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 8 p.m., Friday

Inspired by the seasons and topographies, George Winston’s concerts feature a variety of styles including melodic folk piano, New Orleans R&B piano, and stride piano. He performs songs from his seasonal favorites, as well as Peanuts pieces from his Vince Guaraldi tribute albums and more.

‘Transcending Realism’ POAC art show

Venue: Columbia Bank Atrium, 414 Church St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-7 p.m., Friday

‘Transcending Realism’ artists reception hosted by Pend Oreille Arts Council. Refreshments and wine provided. Join in on a journey through the movements of art history, starting with realism and traditional art, then blasting into a kaleidoscope of distinctive artistic styles. Meet 15 POAC artists and discover what influences each one’s unique approach.

The Powers

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m., Friday

The Powers call their songs and style indie folk/country. Based out of Coeur d’Alene, the group has a delightful mix of parts from vocal harmonies with acoustic guitar to banjos fighting with fiddles.

DJ Wally Fresh

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m., Friday

It’s the long-awaited return of this artist on the Two-One-Niner patio.

Scotia Road

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., Sandpoint

Time: 7-10 p.m., Friday

About time this fine band got back to town, be sure to check out their sound.

Saturday, Sept. 24

100,000 Poets for Change

Venue: Evans Brothers Coffee, 524 Church St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 1-4 p.m., Saturday

Poets, artists and musicians around the world are planning individual events to take place simultaneously on Sept. 24, in conjunction with 100,000 Poets for Change and their aspirations for a better world. Join Sandpoint artists as they connect with their creative colleagues around the globe.

‘A Town Called Panic’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 3:30 and 7:30 p.m., Saturday

Join the fun at Arthouse Theater Day! In this animated film, Cowboy and Indian plan to construct a barbecue pit for the birthday of their friend, Horse. The delivery of an accidental purchase of 50 million bricks rather than the intended 50 destroys their house, and attempts to rebuild are foiled when their walls are continually stolen. Determined to track down the thieves, the trio travels to the center of the earth, where they discover the culprits are a group of mad scientists. Rated G.

National Ballroom Dance Week Social Dance

Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m., Saturday

Come celebrate the fun tradition of social dancing in Sandpoint. This event will feature three dance lessons, Fox Trot, Rumba ad Swing, all taught by a local professional instructor from 7- 8 pm, followed by general dancing, refreshments, door prizes, mixers, and a drawing for a month of free dance classes. There will also be a drawing for a free month of dance lessons. Singles and couples are welcome.

Admission: $9 adults, $6 for USA Dance members and $5 teens. USA Dance events are alcohol and tobacco free.

Mobius Riff

Doug Bond

He picks, he sings, he juggles hamsters! OK, we made the hamsters up, but he sure does make some stellar music. Swing by the beer hall for a long listen.

Holistic Fair

Venue: Inquire Within, 516 Oak St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday

Experience a wide assortment of healing modalities, readings, bodywork and more.

Head of the Pend Oreille Regatta

Venue: Bonner Park West (next to the Priest River Yacht Club) in Priest River, Idaho.

Time: 8:30 a.m., Saturday (Race finishes at about 8:45, so don’t be late!)

Join the action for races, food and fun as Priest River celebrates Oktoberfest and the Pend Oreille River becomes the watery stage for this regatta.

Sunday, Sept. 25

Dover Bay 5K-9 Fun Run

Venue: Dover Bay Resort, 659 Lakeshore Ave., in Dover.

A fun run for the whole family! Proceeds will help homeless cats and dogs at the Panhandle Animal Shelter.

Spokane String Quartet, ‘Magnificent Wilderness’

Venue: Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Sprague Ave., in Spokane.

The program includes works by Joseph Haydn (Quartet No. 63 in B-flat Major, Op. 76, No. 4, “Sunrise”), Lei Liang (“Gobi Gloria”), and Felix Mendelssohn (String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, Op. 80).

Mandolin Orchestra playing session

Venue: Music Conservatory of Sandpoint, 110 Main St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30-8 p.m., Tuesday (and continuing on Tuesday evenings)

Join the mandolin craze by joining the free Mandolin Orchestra! All you need is an instrument and a very basic ability to read music and all music played is in the easy to intermediate level. Ukuleles, guitars and other fretted instruments also welcome.
